"A goal without a plan is just a
wish." - Larry Elder
Hello! It's good to see you back here again!
That's quite a quote isn't it? "A goal without a plan is just a wish." Pretty
awe-inspiring.
It's your goal that I want to quickly discuss before we go any further because having a goal,
an idea, some kind of set plan as to what you want to accomplish in your online journey, is so
imperative to your online success.
This is because it's so easy, too easy, to get caught up in the "next best
thing".
Here's a quick story to illustrate:
Jane had just been laid off of her job. She was hurt, confused and most of all very
scared because she simply didn't know what she was going to do. The job market was a mess, and she
often heard from friends that finding a good job wasn't easy. That she'd probably be better off getting
a part-time job someplace else for a fraction of the pay.
Jane decided that she'd maybe like to try her hand at an online business instead. A
place where she didn't have to worry about being laid off.
So she decided to visit a few message boards, got a few ideas running around in her head,
watched a few videos on YouTube, checked her email, visited Facebook, and before she knew it, the whole day
had gone by...and she still didn't have an idea as to what she was going to do!
Does this sound familiar?
If it does, you are NOT alone! I've done this myself, ventured around online, looking
for inspiration wherever I could find it, only to be side-tracked by a post someone made on Facebook or a
video that was getting a lot of views at YouTube.
The important thing to note here is that everyone has fallen into this
trap!
But if it is your goal, your DESIRE to truly create an online business that brings in the
income you want, you must focus on what you want your goal to be.
And the best way to do that is to write down your
goal.
Here's why:

In an experiment performed by two
prominent social psychologists, Morton Deutsch and Harold Gerard, we see just how powerful written
commitments can be.
The premise of the study was to
have college students estimate the length of some lines that they were
shown.
One section of students had to
write down their estimates, sign their names to them and then turn them into the one giving the
experiment.
The next section of students also
wrote down their estimates but they did so on a Magic Writing pad which they then erased by lifting
the plastic cover before anyone could see what they had written.
The last group of students just
kept the estimates in their heads, and did not write them down.
What the researchers wanted to
find out was which group of students would be most likely to stick with their first judgement after
finding out that those judgements were incorrect.
All of the students were then
given information that suggested their first estimate was wrong and they were then given the
opportunity to change their estimates.
The group of students who only
did the estimates in their head were the least loyal to those choices.
Those who had written down their
estimates on a Magic Pad were significantly less willing to change their minds when they were
offered the chance.
But by far, the group of students
who had written down their estimates, signed them, and then handed them in were the MOST loyal in
their decisions and most of them refused to move from their initial position even when they were
proven wrong.

And this wasn't the only case cited by prominent Doctors and Psychologists.
There are multiple stories that cite the importance of writing information down and
sticking to that information.

variety of studies for you. http://scholar.google.com/
The point is, a goal must be written down in order for it to be
effective.
And, although this may sound a little bit "old school" write down your
goal actually using a pen and a piece of paper.
This is because there are numerous studies that indicate actually writing something down with
a pen on a sheet of paper makes a stronger connection with our brain. It helps us remember better and
it's more of an act of commitment on our part.
So now, think about what it is you want to achieve and start to write down your
goal.
Here are some tips to help you get the most out of that goal for yourself:
- Be specific. Instead of "buy a house" you instead would
say "A two-story house on an acre of land in Hawaii."
- Make it measurable. Instead of "sell more widgets", write
down "sell 50 widgets by this time next month."
- Make it realistic. If you're just starting out online, you
aren't going to make a million dollars in a month. The key here is to make it
achievable to you. If you have 8 hours a day to work on your business, a goal of
$100 a day within 3 months is very feasible. If you can only work on your business part-time, then
a goal of $20 a day may be more realistic.
And once you've written down those goals, review
them FREQUENTLY!
I would even go so far as to suggest each morning before you begin your day. It's also
helpful if you actually read those goals aloud.
Again, the writing solidifies it in your mind as to what you want to accomplish, and the
reading it aloud reinforces those ideas to your brain.
I know you may feel a little bit silly and your family or significant other may look at
you a little strangely, but it is an incredibly effective way to get those goals you want to achieve set in
your mind.
Tomorrow, we'll talk about your mindset before we get into the nitty-gritty of it all and
start to get down to the "doing" of your online business.
We'll see you then!
